Abstract: The ecological water requirement of estuaries and coastal areas around Bohai was in serious condition due to water scarcity. This paper simulates salinity distributions of the Zhangweixin River estuary with ECOMSED model and analyzes the areas with suitable salinity in this region with different freshwater discharges, based on salinity tolerance of fishes. The results show that at current freshwater input scenario, the value of suitable salinity area for fishes in the Zhangweixin River estuary is quite low. The curve is drawn between freshwater inflows and areas of suitable salinity region, which gives results that the minimum ecological water demand of the Zhangweixin River estuary is 10 m3/s, and suitable ecological water demand is about 160 m3/s. And the minimum and suitable water needed in a year is about 9.4 × 10 8 m3 and 15.2×10 8 m3 respectively.
